Volvo Cars Delivers One Millionth Plug-In Hybrid
November 13 2025 - Gary Mollohan

Volvo Cars has reached a major milestone in its electrification journey, delivering its one millionth plug-in hybrid. This achievement underscores the company’s transition toward becoming a fully electrified carmaker, with PHEVs continuing to play a central role in its growth.

In the first half of 2025, plug-in hybrids accounted for 23 percent of Volvo’s global sales. Volumes have risen sharply, from nearly 46,000 units in 2019 to more than 177,000 in 2024, driven by strong demand for the XC60 and XC90 across Europe, the US, and China.

The XC60 has been the best-selling PHEV in Europe and the global premium segment leader for three consecutive years, maintaining its position in 2025. Both the XC60 and XC90 were refreshed last year, strengthening their appeal in key markets.

Volvo now holds the highest share of PHEV sales among legacy premium automakers. Internal data shows that drivers often use these vehicles like full EVs, with about half of total driving time powered solely by electricity, especially in urban areas.

A pioneer in plug-in technology, Volvo introduced its first PHEV in 2012 with the V60 diesel estate and later became the only global carmaker to offer PHEV versions across its entire lineup. Today, five plug-in hybrid models complement six fully electric vehicles, giving Volvo a balanced portfolio and a strategic edge in premium electrification.
